Election day walk

Today Finland votes in the municipal elections. At least over here in Helsinki the weather was excellent for the day and there seemed to be lot of people around. Municipal elections do bring out more people to vote as it is closer to home.

After enjoying my civil right of voting in a free and democratic state, I went for a long walk with my camera.

The continuing cold weather had made a thin ice on top of the seawater and it sparkled beautifully.

The birds were also visible, enjoying their daily lives. As winter comes, less and less birds can be seen here in the harsh northern climate, but some of the ones that do stay are absolutely beautiful.

Cityscape 2

Sun sets over a city deep in the autumn. There is even a relatively high chance of snowfall in the coming week or so. The Olympic stadium and its tower, the mainstage of 1952 Games is lit up by the beuatiful sunset. To the right the old building of Meilahti Tower Hospital which is under renovation.

The tower of the Olympic stadium is one of many landmarks in Helsinki.

Towards the south the famous Finlandia hall sits on shore of Töölö bay. It has been a landmark of Helsinki since when it was built in the early ’60s.

Finlandia hall is lit up and the beautiful architecture of this building is evident from afar.

Cactus vs Flower

The contrast between this bleak watery weekend has been a great reminder that here in Finland one must enjoy outdoors as much as possible when the weather is nice. Constant rain is A big downer, at least for myself. Hopefully next week we will get a little sunshine as well.

Here is in pics a contrast between a cactus and a flower. Both in their way extremely beautiful, exquisite, yet on the other hand the other is borne of a hostile environment and has to protect itself much more visibly to survive.

Autumn blues (and greens)

Slowly but certainly the winter is coming over the Northern hemisphere and the last days have been gloomy and wet. It has rained pretty constantly in Helsinki since the weekend and the last of the leaves are dropping from trees. South Finland has yet to see snow and hopefully that day is still quite a bit in the future.

The gloomy weather is an excellent excuse to spend time indoors and enjoy good company or a cup of hot chocolate and a good book.
