Darkest day of the year did not feel as dark as the preceding couple of weeks as we finally have snow and winter in Helsinki once more.
A quick walk outside the newest, shopping mall in Helsinki, called Redi. A cityscape in constant change, the Kalasatama region has been growing rapidly with new apartments and high rise, but before now they had a serious lack of services, which now has been rectified.
Sun peeking through the clouds, imperious and beautiful. Reminding that there is always sunshine in the end.
After slight iOS caused problems: Today’s lunch was a welcome visit to the nearby Nepalese restaurant of Lali Gurans. This SHAHI KUKHURO (chicken breast in tomato-cashew and coconut sauce) was very tasty and the naan bread were also good.
Morning mist rises as the city wakes and starts to bustle like a warren. Soft snofall forms a misty atmosphere.
Thursday was the day the winter actually started with a little soft snowfall. Waking up to friday was an entirely different moment as a small snowstorm hit the south coast. The whole day snowed and in the evening the landscape had turned from a bleak blackish autumn to a snowy winter wonderland of frozen water.
Saturday morning the weather cleared and it was a treat to go outside and enjoy the sunshine. The cold wind however had not yet departed so it was important to dress properly.
Running water does not obviously freeze easy so the rapids of river Vantaa where of course open. Ice had formed on the rocks though and there was snow everywhere.
Very few people had yet come outside, even though the weather was much nicer and it was bright. Only a couple of people were around either walking their dogs or photographing as well..
The storm had torn branches of the trees and this area was full of the small ones.

Perjantaina Helsinkiin iski Antiksi nimetty lumimyräkkä. Lounasaikaan kuitenkin kaipasimme ruokaa ja taukoa töistä, joten uskaltauduimme ulkoilmaan ja suuntasimme läheiseen Kellohalliin.
On friday a small snowstorm arrived and with it winter proper. At lunch time we braved the climate enough to scramble to the nearby Kellohalli for some food and a break from work.
Päätös ulos menosta oli täysin nälän aiheuttama, mutta yllätys oli erittäin mieluisa kun lounaslistalla ollut naudanpaisti paahdetuilla perunoilla tuotiin pöytään (luonnollisesti oheen kuului normaali salaatti ja erinomaiset tuoreet leivät).
The decision to go outside came out of sheer necessity to eat something, but boy were we in for a suprise. On the lunch menu there was a rare treat. Beef steak and roasted potatoes. (plus of course the usual salad and bread for starters).
Naudanlihaa tarjoiltiin mediumina ja näytti heti erittäin lupaavalta. Liha olikin erinomaista, sopivan mureaa ja pestokastike kelpasi oheen erinomaisesti. Paahdetut perunat olivat toimiva lisuke lihalle. Ulosmeno palkittiin 110%:sesti.
The beef steak was served medium and looked delicious. The meat was just right and the pesto sauce was delicious as well. Potatoes and the tomatoes were a nice compliment to the meat. 110% worth going outside in the storm!

Aivan Kellohallia vastapäätä on vanhempi ruokapaikka eli kahvila-ravintola Palema. Kalasataman ja Sörnäisten alueella löytyykin yllättävän paljon erilaisia lounaspaikkoja. Useat paikat vaan tuntuvat olevan hieman piilosalla ja ne pitää etsimällä etsiä.
Palema on sinällään tyypillinen työmaaruokala. Tarkoituksena on selvästi tarjota ruokaa, jolla isompikin äijä selviää työpäivän rasitteista. Asiakaskunta onkin poikkeuksellisen miespainoitteinen, täältä kun ei kannata terveellisempiä ruokavaihtoehtoja lähteä etsimään. Sitä varten on alueella parempia vaihtoehtoja.
Paikan luonne on tyypillisen “äijäruokalan” tyylinen. Konstailematonta, rasvaista ja isokokoista lounasannosta osaa odottaa jo ovesta sisään tullessa. Paikan sisustuskin on ilmeisesti tahattomasti retro.
Paloman annokset ovat koon puolelta riittäviä isompaankin nälkään, tosin maidon ja mehun erillishinnoittelu on pieni miinus muuten hyvään kokonaisuuteen.
Maultaan ruoat vetävät vertoja Kallion legendaariselle Heipan herkulle, tosin annoskoko jää erillisen salaatin puuttuessa hieman pienemmäksi. Ruoka tulee yleensä ripeähkösti ja tilauksen tehdessä on ilo huomata että pihvi menee samantien valmistukseen. Käymisen arvoinen paikka silloin, kun lounasaikaan kaipaa pihviä.
